Frequently Asked Questions - Registrar

How do I register to vote in Surry County?

To register to vote in Virginia, you must be a United States citizen, be a resident of Virginia, be 18 years old by the next general election, and had your rights restored if you have ever been convicted of a felony or declared mentally incapacitated. A voter application must be fully completed to be eligible to vote in Virginia. You may request a voter registration application or an absentee application from the Registrar’s office in person or by mail. Voter registration applications are also available at any DMV office, the Department of Social Services, or Health Department.

Once the Registrar receives your completed application, it will be reviewed and if everything is filled out properly, a voter card will be mailed to you. The voter card will have your name, address, the name and address of your polling place, and the election district in which you are eligible to vote. If you should move, change your name, or if any information is incorrect on your card, please notify this office so you may continue to be a registered voter of Surry County.

Am I already registered to vote?

Staff in the Registrar’s Office can verify your registration or assist you in registering.  Citizens may contact the office from our landing page by e-mail or call 757-294-5213 for assistance.

Can I vote by Absentee Ballot?

Citizens may call the Registrar’s Office at 757-294-5213 and staff will mail an application to you; or you may visit our office at 45 School Street, Surry, Virginia 23883 to fill out an application in person.  An application for an Absentee Ballot can also be downloaded directly from the State Board of Elections web site; the link is provided on our landing page. Persons who are registered in Surry County may vote by absentee ballot if they have a disability or illness, expect to be away on business, on vacation, attending college, employed outside the United States, or in the military.

What time do polls open?

The polls open at 6:00am and close at 7:00pm.

Where do I go to vote?

Your polling location and address can be found on your voter card.  If you still are not sure, staff in the Registrar’s Office can provide that information.
