Illegal Dumping at County Waste Collection Facilities

At their meeting on September 7, 2017, the Surry County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to adopt Ordinance 2017-03 to address illegal dumping activities at County Waste Collection facilities.  The ordinance adds Section 22-3 to the County Code as follows:

 

CHAPTER 22- SOLID WASTE

ARTICLE I. – IN GENERAL

Sec. 22-3. – Disposal of solid waste at convenience centers.

(a)     It shall be unlawful for persons other than county residents or county real property owners to dispose of waste at county-provided convenience centers. Residents of the county and owners of real property in the County shall provide proper documentation of residence status or ownership of property upon request. 

(b)    Violations of this section shall be subject to a civil penalty, not to exceed $50.00 for the first violation. The civil penalty for subsequent violations within 12 months of the first violation shall not exceed $200.00. These penalties are in lieu of criminal penalties and preclude prosecution of such violation as a misdemeanor.
