Winter Storm Watch

Surry County is in a winter storm watch and is expecting less then 1 inch of snow, icing in some areas of the county and approximately 1.5’’-2’’ of rain later tonight into Thursday morning. Please keep in mind that these storms can shift direction anytime so please be prepared for down trees and power lines, icy road conditions and minor flooding over the next few days. Attached is an updated briefing, as of 8:30 AM EST on 2/17/2021, regarding a significant winter storm expected to impact portions of the region later tonight through tomorrow.
Threats: Significant ice accumulation is expected, especially near and west of I-95. A crippling ice accumulation is expected across the hardest hit areas from the previous system. In addition, heavy rainfall is expected for portions of Eastern VA, MD Eastern Shore, and Northeast NC. Flooding of main steam rivers will continue.
Timing: Impacts are expected to begin later tonight (mainly after midnight) and continue through the day tomorrow and potentially lingering into tomorrow night.
Location: Greatest winter weather impacts: Piedmont to Richmond and areas along and just east of the I-95 corridor. Greatest heavy rain impacts: Eastern VA, Maryland Eastern Shore, and Northeast NC.
