Effective July 1, 2007, any veterinarian providing a rabies vaccination to a dog in the State of Virginia is required to notify the Treasurer's Office of the locality in which the animal is housed. The owner of the dog must present the rabies certificate to the Treasurer's Office annually to purchase a license for the animal within 90 days. Only a valid certificate from a licensed veterinarian will be accepted.
Dog licenses may be purchased from November 1 to January 31 each year. Fees apply to all dogs age 4 months and older. To purchase an unsexed license, the rabies certificate must specify that the dog has been spayed or neutered. Kennel tags require a minimum of 5 dogs in the kennel.
