Surry County responded to a Code of Virginia law and in 1991 adopted an ordinance that is required under Virginia Code Section 9VAC25 -830-130, and the Surry County Chesapeake Bay Preservation District Ordinance Section 3-1404(E). The Chesapeake Bay Septic System Pump-Out Program was implemented to protect groundwater quality, as well as the water quality, of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. In order to comply with this program, septic systems within Chesapeake Bay Preservation Areas (CBPA's) must be pumped out or inspected by a licensed sewage handler at least once every 5 years. The Department of Planning and Community Development sends letters to property owners every 5 years to remind them of this requirement.
